Sul finire del XIII secolo, sul trono di Scozia siede l'usurpatore Edoardo I Plantageneto, re d'Inghilterra. Lo scozzese William Wallace, la cui famiglia era stata massacrata dagli inglesi, diventato un uomo colto, ma legato alle tradizioni rurali della terra natia, torna dopo molti anni nel suo villaggio, dove vorrebbe creare una famiglia con la bella Murron che, per eludere lo "jus primae noctis" imposto dal feudatario inglese, sposa in segreto. Poi deve difenderla da un tentativo di stupro, ma catturata, la giovane viene barbaramente uccisa. Adirato William suscita una rivolta che estromette gli inglesi dal territorio dopo averli sconfitti a Stirling. Poi con la sua armata, formata da volontari provenienti da tutta la Scozia, Wallace conquista York. Edoardo I, preoccupato, invia a negoziare con lui la principessa Isabella di Francia, moglie dell'inetto principe Edoardo, suo figlio. Il furbo tiranno pensa di sfruttare l'avvenenza e l'intelligenza della giovane Isabella per ammansire Wallace.

Rogue One è il primo capitolo di una nuova avventurosa serie cinematografica che esplora i personaggi e gli eventi che ruotano intorno alla saga di Guerre Stellari. Questo evento, fondamentale per la storia di Star Wars, spingerà delle persone ordinarie a unirsi per realizzare imprese straordinarie, diventando parte di qualcosa di più grande. Rogue One è dunque ambientato prima degli eventi narrati in Star Wars Episodio IV: Una Nuova Speranza e si discosta dai film della saga, mantenendo comunque una certa familiarità con l'universo di Star Wars. Trama
William Garin e Pero Tovar sono due mercenari provenienti dall'Europa che giungono in Cina con una missione: recuperare un po' di polvere nera, una sorta di antenata della polvere da sparo, per poterla esportare nel continente europeo. I due, durante le ricerche, riescono a sopravvivere all'assalto di una terrificante bestia sconosciuta, di cui conservano un arto reciso. I due mercenari, catturati dalle truppe imperiali dell'esercito cinese, finiscono poi per combattere al loro fianco le mostruose creature, chiamate "Taotie", le quali ogni sessant'anni circa minacciano l'umanità. Il primo grande attacco vede migliaia di questi mostri assaltare i possenti bastioni della Grande Muraglia, ma vengono respinti con armi sconosciute ai due mercenari, che si rendono protagonisti di un atto eroico combattendo e uccidendo due Taotie arrivati fin sopra le mura.
