Nel 1976 un terribile terremoto sconvolge la regione del Tangshan, in Cina. Ovunque si percepisce l’odore di morte e distruzione e una donna, il cui marito è morto sotto le macerie, è messa di fronte al bivio più difficile della sua esistenza: i due piccoli figli, un maschio e una femmina, sono intrappolati sotto un pilastro di cemento e i soccorritori le chiedono quale dei due salvare. In osservanza delle rigide disposizioni cinesi, la madre sceglie il bambino. Data ufficialmente per morta, anche la figlia riesce a salvarsi ma è adottata da un’altra famiglia. Dopo trentadue anni, un nuovo tragico evento riunirà casualmente la famiglia, incapace di superare il dolore vissuto nel tempo.
